The problem

Recall-based study prepares you for the wrong exam.

NPE questions ask you to choose and justify an action from a clinical scenario. Practise applying knowledge when the details are incomplete.

Flashcard decks train the answer.

They rehearse the fact, not the judgement call the vignette actually turns on. On exam day the options are all plausible — recall does not separate them.

Video courses stay passive.

Watching an expert reason is not the same as reasoning yourself. Without a forced attempt before the reveal, nothing sticks and nothing is calibrated.

Random banks give a score, not a diagnosis.

A percentage tells you how you went, not which competency will let you down — so you cannot target the next hour of study.

The exam tests committed reasoning under uncertainty. So the preparation has to train the reasoning — deliberately, actively, and against your own weak spots.

The method

The NPE Reasoning Engine

Use seven steps to work through a vignette: READ → DO → CHECK. Apply the same method in each drill.

1
Read

Frame the picture

Identify who the client is, the consent status, the confidentiality limits and the real question the vignette is testing — before you look at the options.

2
Do

Choose the defensible action

Apply the domain pivot and the master discriminators to pick the most proportionate, targeted next step — and name why each distractor is the seductive, maximal or out-of-sequence trap.

3
Check

Test it against the gates

Run the final pass — is the action proportionate, targeted, documented and lawful? If any gate fails, it is the wrong option, however attractive it looks.

Coverage

Mapped to the four official domains.

Each drill is tagged to an exam domain. Use the dashboard to choose what to practise next.

Domain 1

Ethics & Legal Practice

Confidentiality and its limits, valid subpoenas, duty to warn, dual relationships, mandatory notification, record-keeping and advertising standards — trained as a defensibility decision, gate by gate.

Domain 2

Psychological Assessment

WAIS-IV index interpretation, score-discrepancy logic, validity-scale reading and test-to-referral matching — enter the scores, flag the significant gap, decide what is interpretable.

Domain 3

Interventions

Modality-to-presentation matching across the therapies, third-wave distinctions, the evidence hierarchy, Stages of Change and the microskills that hold the alliance — sorted, sequenced and contrasted.

Domain 4

Clinical Communication

Structured clinical handover, audience-tailored reporting, feedback delivery for comprehension and retention, referral pathways and documentation adequacy — assembled and checked against the model answer.

Psychopathology reasoning cross-cuts Assessment and Interventions — DSM-5 differential diagnosis by criteria, age gates and exclusion rules is woven through the relevant drills.

On the roadmap

What we are building next.

See which features are available and which are planned.

Expanded MCQ bank, balanced across domains

The bank is deepest in psychopathology; authoring is rebalancing toward Ethics, Assessment and Interventions so every domain reaches exam parity.

Grounded AI tutor

A tutor that answers only from the verified item bank and curriculum, with citations and guardrails — added once the bank gives it trustworthy ground truth.

Per-competency adaptive drilling

Your incorrect-answer feed will re-weight future drills automatically toward your weakest of the core competencies.

Fit

Who this is for.

Built for

  • Provisional psychologists on the 5+1 internship pathway preparing for the National Psychology Exam
  • Higher-degree graduates sitting the NPE as part of general registration
  • Overseas-qualified psychologists preparing for the exam as part of the AHPRA process
  • Learners who want to train reasoning and judgement, not just memorise facts
  • Anyone re-sitting who wants to know exactly which competency to target next

Probably not for

  • Anyone looking for a guaranteed outcome — this is preparation, not a promise
  • Learners who only want passive video and no active practice
  • People wanting official exam content — NPE Apex practice tools are an independent educational resource
  • Those studying for a different registration exam (this is NPE-specific)

Questions

Frequently asked.

How do I access these practice tools?

Included with the NPE program: the NPE Reasoning Engine method and trainer, rationale-backed practice questions with per-distractor explanations, Timed Exam Mode (shorter sessions in exam, tutor and custom modes), audio and video drills, Inner-Dialogue Shadowing, the DDx Matrix, the course review queue and a readiness dashboard — with 12 months of access from enrolment.

Is this a subscription?

These tools are included with the NPE program and are not sold separately. See the NPE program page for current purchase and access terms.

How is this different from a video course or a question bank?

NPE Apex practice tools combine lessons, practice questions and timed exams. Drills ask you to answer before showing the explanation.

Who wrote the content?

NPE Apex practice tools were written by a registered Australian psychologist. They are an independent educational resource and are not affiliated with AHPRA or the Psychology Board of Australia.

Can I prepare for both the OSCE and the NPE?

Yes. The OSCE and the NPE are separate exams, and we run a separate OSCE preparation program. If you are sitting both, ask us about the bundle — the two programs share the same reasoning-first approach and one login.

Will it tell me if I'm ready?

The dashboard shows a practice-readiness signal based on your performance across the drills and a per-competency heat-map of your weak areas. It reflects how you are going in practice — it is not a prediction or guarantee of any real-exam result.

What if it isn't right for me?

Full refund within 14 days of purchase if you have opened less than 20% of the materials. When we refund you, your access to the program ends. Ask for a refund from your account, or read the refund policy. This policy is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If something you bought is faulty or not as described, you can ask us to fix it or refund you, and the 14-day and 20% limits do not apply.

What device do I need?

NPE Apex practice tools run in the browser and work on mobile, tablet and desktop. These practice tools store progress, settings and the review queue in this browser on this device.
